A new appreciation for preschool teachers

Last week our church hosted Vacation Bible School for over 1200 kids. I've been wanting to help with VBS for years and finally this year it fell during my summer break so I was able to sign up. I was assigned to the Pre-K games station. The games instructions and materials were provided for me, and I was assigned an 8th-grade volunteer to be my helper. The goal of our station was to let the kids run and get their energy out rather than do a lot of teaching.
We had 4 groups of 25 kids rotate through our station. We played games like Duck Duck Goose and Follow the Leader. Most of the kids liked playing the games, but I learned that keeping a large group of preschoolers on track is VERY HARD. And I even had lots of help, since each group that came through had their own adult and youth volunteers. In each group there were several kids who preferred playing in the dirt to playing our game, or didn't want to pass the ball when we played games like Hot Potato. I can't imagine being a preschool teacher and trying to plan a full days worth of learning activities for the kids. Their attention spans are so short you can't do one activity for too long.
The kids were cute, I had fun playing with them, and liked volunteering at VBS, but..,
Bottom line: preschool teachers have a special gift, including lots of patience and creativity! I think I chose the right profession- I'll leave the job of teaching large groups of little ones to the teachers.

1200 kids!!! That is crazy. I promise you amusing one two year old for 12 hours a day is hard enough. I can't imagine that many. Ethans attention span is about 3 minutes...

glad you survived!

I agree 100%! I think teachers have the hardest job of all.
